A motor starter offers defense by regulating the equipment's electrical output at its starting point of operation (when you turn it on or it engages). After then, the starter serves as a fail-safe to keep your system safe. An optional electric starter is for smaller outboard boat motors.
Large motors start by cranking them with outboard starters. Outboard starters, constructed similarly to vehicle starters, use a battery to activate the Bendix and engage the starter ring. A defective outboard starter will typically make a clicking sound when started.
