For exhaust steam to condense and be fed back into the boiler, the condenser, a heat exchanger, removes the latent heat from the steam. The condensate temperature should be reduced below the steam temperature to achieve this condensing with the least amount of under-cooling. Additionally, a condenser extracts gases and vapors produced by condensing steam.
Regenerative main condensers are a common feature of steam turbine propulsion equipment. In this configuration, some of the steam bypasses the tubes and flows directly into the condensate sump. As a result, the condenser operates more effectively since the condensate is at the same temperature as the steam. Air suction is applied to the condenser shell to remove the gases and vapors produced by the condensing steam.
