It takes hot exhaust gasses straight from the engine and directs them into an inner "pipe" or lengthy chamber, cooled by raw water running through an outer casing. The hot exhaust gasses and water to the riser, where they mix to continue their journey overboard. Inboard engines, exhaust manifolds, and risers are metal castings that convey hot exhaust gasses away from the engine.
