Gaskets are employed wherever a union or flange is needed to stop leaks. Seals are utilized between rotating engine parts, pumps, and shafts, whereas gaskets seal a connection between two components or flanges with flat surfaces.
The flange segments that connect the water pump to the inlet and output pipes are sealed by water pump gaskets, to put it simply. Seal pairs provide a tight connection between the pump and those ports where water is pulled by a positive displacement mechanism, such as a volute impeller. There is no need to apply a sealer to the engine gasket because it is enough. Putting it on the pump is a smart move. The pump is effectively blocked off.
