NEEDLE AND SEAT (118-7041) Sea Star Solutions The needle and seat are the initial points of contact for gasoline entering a carburetor. The seat is normally conical, and the needle has a tip that seals against the seat at a set level to prevent gasoline from entering the carburetor. This keeps the engine and engine compartment from flooding. The needle in the jet moves up and down to alter the orifice size and so meter the fuel. The quantity of fuel going up through the main jet and the needle jet is controlled by the needle's tapered form. The aperture grows larger as it rises, allowing more fuel into the mix.
