The ignition coil is essentially a miniature transformer that converts the engine battery's 12 volts into the thousands of volts required. HEI can function securely at substantially greater current loads. More power supplied across the coil's primary circuit implies more spark energy to the spark plugs. This extra power guarantees more thorough combustion at both idle and full throttle.
