In an outboard's cooling system, a thermostat is a temperature-controlled valve that opens or closes based on the temperature. When the thermostat is closed, the cooling water circulation through the outboard is disrupted, raising the motor's working temperature. The engine will run at the proper temperature if the thermostat is working properly.
