The input and the exit in the bowl have check valves to guarantee one-way fluid flow. A vacuum created by the rising diaphragm pulls the fuel from the fuel tank into the fuel bowl. The fuel pump will deliver less fuel pressure than is necessary for optimal engine performance if the fuel pump diaphragm is damaged. Due to the low fuel pressure, giving the engine less gas will produce fuel starvation and an excessively lean air-fuel mixture at the carburetor.
