Wear rings, which are mounted on the casing and impeller as sacrificial parts, prevent fluid from returning from discharge to suction. They offer a regenerative barrier between the casing and a closed impeller. Because of the pressure difference, the discharge fluid, which is under high pressure, will always have a tendency to want to return to the impeller's suction side, which is under lower pressure. Wear rings are used to lessen leakage that occurs between the pump's suction and discharges sides. It prevents debris intake from damaging the impeller housing.
